matariki

What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars . It rises in mid winter late May or early June. For many Māori, its the start of a new year.
Matariki was a time to remember those who had died in the last year. But it was also a happy event  crops had been harvested and seafood and birds had been collected. With plenty of food in the storehouses, Matariki was a time for singing, dancing and feasting.
The brighter the stars indicated the warmer the season would be and a more productive crop. It was also seen as an important time for family to gather.

Maori tattoo's can be used to represent their family heritage. The world tattoo comes from the Tahitian word tatau. Captain James Cook used the word tattow when he witnessed tattooing for the first time in Tahiti, in 1769. And according to Maori mythology a man bye the name of Mataora (which means "Face of Vitality") loved a lady (her name was Niwareka) from another realm they loved each other but something happen and the parted. Mataora was very sad and tried and tried to get to the realm. But when he got there Niwareka's dad made fun of Mataora's face paint. But in Mataora's  very humbled state, Mataora begged Niwareka for forgiveness, which she eventually accepted. Niwareka's father then offered to teach Mataora the art of tattooing, and at the same time Mataora also leant the art of Taniko - the plaiting of cloak borders in many colours.

This is a video on a Taiaha and we will be sharing some information on the Taiaha.
The Taiaha is a living thing The Taiaha has three parts the tongue , the head, and the end of the taiaha. The tonge is called Arero the head is called upoko and the end of the taiaha is call tiana. The Taiaha can be made out of wood or whale bones and is a weapon used for close range, The taiaha's face is not to be used in battle or to place the head on the ground for it is disrespectful.
